Niagara Falls in Autumn

Autumn at Niagara is not one season, it is three. September still runs on summer hours with none of the summer queues. October is the month the place starts closing, on dates you can plan around. November hands the falls over to the lights. Every date below was read off the operator that sets it.

The short answer

The best time to see Niagara Falls in autumn is the middle two weeks of September, when every attraction is still open and the summer crowds have gone. October is the month things close, on published dates, and it is also when the gorge turns colour and prices drop. November is the quietest, and the boats stop on the 8th.

Autumn is the only season here where the answer changes week by week, so the rest of this page is dates rather than adjectives.

The dated unwind

Everything that changes, in order

Thirteen dates between early September and the end of November. Every one was read off the operator that sets it on , and three of them are confirmed twice: the fireworks date and the Maid of the Mist date are the same in our booking partner's departure schedules as they are on the operators' own pages.

  1. State park Lot 3 stops charging

Niagara Falls State Park collects no fee at Lot 3, for Three Sisters Islands, between 8 September and 21 May. Lots 1 and 2 still charge, and all of them are free on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

  2. The lights come on at 6:30 PM

The first of four autumn shifts. Through 19 September the illumination starts at 7:00 PM; from the 20th it is 6:30. Every shift makes the evening shorter and the day out easier with children.

  3. Maid of the Mist drops to a 5 PM finish

From 28 September the boat runs daily 9:00 to 5:00 rather than to 6:00 at weekends. The last sailing of the day is now in the afternoon, which matters because the lights do not come on until after it.

  4. Cave of the Winds loses its evening

Last ticket moves from 6:15 PM to 4:15 PM after the Indigenous Day weekend of 10 and 11 October. The Hurricane Deck in low autumn light is a short window.

  5. The last fireworks of the year

Niagara Parks runs the Falls Fireworks Series nightly at 10:00 PM from 15 May to 12 October, and not one night after it. Everything from mid October is illumination only. This is also Canadian Thanksgiving and the American Indigenous Peoples Day, so it is the busiest night of the autumn and the last one worth staying up for.

  6. The weekend parking surcharge ends

State park Lots 1 and 2 charge $15 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through 11 October. From the 12th it is $10 every day until 31 March. The same date the fireworks stop, parking gets cheaper.

  7. Cave of the Winds falls from $23 to $14

The attraction closes on 19 and 20 October for maintenance and reopens on the winter rate: adult $14 rather than $23, youth $10 rather than $19, and it holds that price until 31 March. A 39% drop on the same waterfall.

  8. Both jet boats finish for the year

The open Whirlpool Jet and the covered Jet Dome both stop taking bookings after 25 October. The rapids they run are Class 5 and the water is no longer a reasonable temperature to be thrown at anybody.

  9. The lights come on at 4:30 PM

The big one. From 1 November the illumination starts at 4:30 PM and runs to 2 AM, two and a half hours earlier than in early September. A November afternoon at the falls turns into a November evening at the falls without anybody waiting around.

  10. The last Maid of the Mist

The published 2026 season ends on 8 November, and from the 9th the schedule reads "Closed for the 2026 Season" until opening day next spring. The lower river carries ice. Every American-side tour that includes the boat stops on the same date.

  11. The Winter Festival of Lights begins

Autumn hands over here. The illuminated run along the Parkway and through Dufferin Islands opens on 14 November, so the last fortnight of autumn is the first fortnight of the light season.

  12. American Thanksgiving closes the American side

Cave of the Winds is shut on 26 November. The falls, the state park and the Canadian side are all open as usual.

  13. White Water Walk and the Aero Car close

Niagara Parks lists both as seasonal, April to November. They are the two attractions built to look at the gorge, which is the thing autumn does best, and they shut at the end of the month.

Dates are the published 2026 season. Operators revise them, and the fireworks in particular are weather permitting: Niagara Parks runs a cancellation line on 1.877.642.7275.

The best month

September at Niagara Falls

September is the best month of the year at Niagara Falls and it is not a close call. For the first three weeks nothing has closed: every boat sails, the Hurricane Deck is out, the fireworks run nightly at 10 PM and the lights come on at 7. What has gone is the crowd. The coach parties thin out after Labor Day, the state park stops charging for Lot 3 on the 8th, and the queue for the boat stops being the thing you remember about the day.

Open and running

  • Every boat, both sides. The Maid of the Mist runs 9 to 5 on weekdays and 9 to 6 at weekends until the 27th
  • Cave of the Winds and the Hurricane Deck, last ticket 6:15 PM
  • Fireworks nightly at 10 PM, weather permitting
  • White Water Walk, the Whirlpool Aero Car and the zipline
  • The gorge starts to turn in the last week, unevenly

Watch out for

  • The lights move from 7:00 PM to 6:30 PM on the 20th
  • Colour is early and patchy. Do not come in September for the leaves
  • Labor Day weekend, 4 to 7 September, is still a summer crowd

The call: Come in the second or third week if you can pick. Everything is running, the price of nothing has gone up, and the falls look exactly as they do in July with a third of the people in front of them.

Illumination

The lights come on 2 hours 30 minutes earlier

This is the single most useful thing to know about an autumn evening at Niagara, and almost nobody plans around it. The illumination switch-on moves forward four times between September and November, and by the last band you can see the falls lit and still be at dinner by six.

Falls illumination switch-on, autumn 2026
DatesLights onWhat that means
September 1 to 197:00 PMSummer hours, minus the summer crowds
September 20 to 306:30 PMHalf an hour earlier, first shift
October 1 to 156:15 PMFireworks still on, to the 12th
October 16 to 316:00 PMIllumination only from here
November 1 to December 314:30 PMLit before most people have eaten

The month of dates

October at Niagara Falls

October is when Niagara starts closing, and it does it on dates rather than gradually. The 12th takes the fireworks and the weekend parking surcharge. The 19th takes $9 off Cave of the Winds and two hours off its day. The 25th takes both jet boats. It is also the month the gorge actually turns, which makes the Aero Car and the White Water Walk worth more in October than at any other point in the year.

Open and running

  • Both boats still sail. The Maid runs daily 9 to 5
  • The Whirlpool Aero Car and White Water Walk, at their best
  • Cave of the Winds, apart from the 19th and 20th
  • Journey Behind the Falls, as every day of the year
  • The jet boats, until the 25th

Watch out for

  • No fireworks after the 12th. A late October evening is lights only
  • Cave of the Winds is shut on the 19th and 20th for maintenance
  • Cave of the Winds last ticket drops to 4:15 PM after the 9th
  • Canadian Thanksgiving on the 12th is the busiest weekend left

The call: The third week is the sweet spot nobody books: the colour is usually up, Cave of the Winds has just dropped to $14, parking is $10 every day, and the boats have not stopped. You lose the fireworks. You save real money.

The leaves

Why the gorge turns, and where to stand

The Niagara Peninsula sits in the Carolinian Life Zone, which Niagara Parks describes as the northernmost edge of the deciduous forest region of eastern North America. That is the reason there is autumn colour here at all, and the reason it is maple and oak and sumac rather than the spruce you get an hour north. The gorge adds the second half of it: two hundred feet of sheltered rock wall, warmer than the plateau above, packed with deciduous trees you look down onto rather than up at.

That downward view is what makes Niagara different from every other leaf-peeping trip. You are not driving a road looking at a hillside. You are standing on the rim of a gorge looking into a canopy, with Class 6 rapids running white underneath it.

We do not print a peak week. No operator publishes one, it moves by a fortnight from year to year, and a guessed date is wrong most years. What is reliable is the shape: patchy in late September, up through October, bare by the middle of November. Check a current foliage report for your own week.

The Niagara gorge below the falls with its walls turning red and gold, transmission towers stepping down to the river
The whirlpool reach, which is the stretch the Aero Car crosses and the White Water Walk runs beside. Both are seasonal, April to November.

🚡 Whirlpool Aero Car

The best autumn view in Niagara and the least obvious. An antique cable car 3,500 feet across the gorge, 250 feet above the whirlpool, with colour on both walls. It crosses the international border four times in one trip and needs no passport, because it starts and ends on the Canadian shore. Closes 30 November.

🌊 White Water Walk

A lift 70 metres down to a quarter-mile boardwalk at the water's edge, beside the Class 6 standing waves. This is the one place you look up at the autumn canopy instead of down. About an hour. Closes 30 November.

🥾 Niagara Glen

Four trails down into the gorge itself, through the Carolinian forest and past boulders left by the falls when they stood here. Open year round and free to walk. Proper footwear, not a stroll: every trail means descending and re-climbing the gorge wall.

🚁 From the air

The only way to see both gorge walls, the whirlpool and all three waterfalls in one frame. Autumn is the best season for it and the flights run all through November, weather permitting.

The handover

November at Niagara Falls

November is two halves with a hinge on the 14th. Until the 8th the Maid of the Mist is still sailing and you can have the boat almost to yourself. After the 8th it is gone until spring. Then on the 14th the Winter Festival of Lights opens, the illumination is already coming on at 4:30 PM, and the falls stop being a daytime attraction altogether. The month ends with White Water Walk and the Aero Car closing on the 30th.

Open and running

  • Journey Behind the Falls, the one major attraction that never closes
  • Cave of the Winds at the $14 winter rate, last ticket 4 PM
  • The Skylon Tower deck and the Clifton Hill attractions
  • Maid of the Mist, to the 8th only
  • White Water Walk and the Aero Car, to the 30th

Watch out for

  • No boats at all from the 9th, on either side of the river
  • Cave of the Winds is closed on the 26th for Thanksgiving
  • The mist freezes on the railings on a cold morning. The footing near Table Rock gets genuinely slippery

The call: Come in the first week for the last boat of the year, or after the 14th for the lights. The fortnight between the two is the quietest the falls get all year, which is either the point or the problem depending on what you came for.

What is on

Autumn dates worth planning around

🎆 Fireworks, nightly to 12 October

10:00 PM over the gorge between the American and Horseshoe falls, every night until the 12th and never after it. Best seen from Queen Victoria Park or the parapet wall on the Canadian rim.

🦃 Canadian Thanksgiving, 12 October

The second Monday in October, and the same weekend as the American Indigenous Peoples Day. The busiest weekend left in the autumn, and by coincidence the last night of fireworks. Book anything for that weekend early.

✨ Winter Festival of Lights, from 14 November

The illuminated run along the Niagara Parkway and through Dufferin Islands opens in mid November, so the last fortnight of autumn is already the light season. This is the one autumn event that gets better as the month gets colder.

🍇 Harvest in the Niagara Peninsula

The vineyards half an hour north of the falls pick through September and October, and the region's wine festivals run in the same window. Dates move each year and are set by the festivals rather than by the falls, so check before you build a day around one.

Before you go

What autumn at Niagara actually asks of you

The mist is the problem, not the air

September is jacket weather and November is near freezing, but the thing that ruins an autumn day here is water rather than temperature. Anywhere near the base of the falls you get wet, and wet at four degrees is a different experience from dry at four degrees. A waterproof outer layer matters more in autumn than a warm one, and it matters more than it does in July.

Footwear, and one recent change

Cave of the Winds has phased out the sandals it was famous for handing out. Their own instruction now is to bring footwear you do not mind getting wet. The decks are soaked and the boardwalk is wooden, so this is not a small detail on a cold day.

Plan the evening backwards

From 1 November the lights are on at 4:30 PM and the last Cave of the Winds ticket is sold at 4:00. In early September the lights do not come on until 7:00 and the boat runs to 6:00. The order you do things in has to change with the month, and the illumination table above is the thing to plan from.

One side or two

The gorge is an international border, so seeing the colour from both rims means a passport and a customs hall each way. If you have one day and no passport, the Canadian rim has the panoramic view and the American side has the closer one. If you have a passport and a whole day, the guided both-sides tour above takes the crossing off your hands.

The upper Niagara rapids running past trees in autumn colour, with the Goat Island bridge and the Canadian skyline beyond
The upper rapids above the falls in October. The bridge is the crossing to Goat Island, which is where Cave of the Winds and the Three Sisters Islands are, and where the state park stops charging for parking from 8 September.
Questions

Niagara Falls in autumn, answered

Is autumn a good time to visit Niagara Falls?

Autumn is a very good time to visit Niagara Falls, and September is the best month of the year. Through the first three weeks of September nothing has closed, the fireworks still run nightly and the summer crowds have gone. October brings the gorge colour and real price drops. November is the quietest month and the one where the boats stop.

What is open in Niagara Falls in autumn?

Open in Niagara Falls in autumn: Journey Behind the Falls all year, Cave of the Winds all year, the Skylon Tower, Clifton Hill and the helicopter and air tours. Seasonal things close on dates. Both jet boats stop on 25 October, the Maid of the Mist on 8 November, and the White Water Walk and Whirlpool Aero Car at the end of November.

When do the Niagara Falls fireworks stop in autumn?

The Niagara Falls fireworks stop on 12 October 2026. Niagara Parks runs the Falls Fireworks Series nightly at 10:00 PM from 15 May to 12 October and not one night after that, so any autumn evening from mid October is the illumination only. Displays are weather permitting.

When is peak fall colour at Niagara Falls?

Peak fall colour at Niagara Falls usually falls somewhere in October, but no operator publishes a date for it and it moves by a fortnight from year to year. We do not print a peak week here because a guessed one is wrong most years. Check a current foliage report for the week you are travelling.

Does the Maid of the Mist run in autumn?

Yes. The Maid of the Mist runs through most of autumn, to 8 November 2026. It sails daily 9:00 to 5:00 from 28 September, and its own schedule reads "Closed for the 2026 Season" from 9 November until opening day next spring, because the lower river carries ice.

Is Niagara Falls cheaper in autumn?

Yes, parts of Niagara Falls get cheaper in autumn, on published dates. Cave of the Winds drops from $23 to $14 for an adult on 19 October. The $15 weekend parking surcharge in the state park ends on 12 October. State park Lot 3 stops charging altogether from 8 September. Boat fares do not change.

What time do the lights come on at Niagara Falls in autumn?

The lights come on at Niagara Falls in autumn at 7:00 PM from 1 to 19 September, 6:30 PM from 20 to 30 September, 6:15 PM from 1 to 15 October, 6:00 PM from 16 to 31 October and 4:30 PM from 1 November. The illumination runs until 2 AM in every one of those bands.

How cold is Niagara Falls in autumn?

Niagara Falls in autumn runs from mild to genuinely cold. September is comfortable in a jacket, October needs layers, and November is near freezing on a bad morning. The variable that catches people out is not the air temperature but the mist: anywhere near the base of the falls you get wet, and wet plus 4 degrees feels far colder than 4 degrees.

Do you need a passport to see the autumn colour on both sides?

Yes. You need a passport, or another accepted crossing document, to see the autumn colour from both sides, because the gorge is an international border. The one exception is the Whirlpool Aero Car, which crosses the border four times on a single trip without needing one, because it starts and finishes on the Canadian shore.

Autumn is a calendar, not a mood

Pick the week and the rest of it follows. Mid September for everything at once, the third week of October for colour and the lower prices, the first week of November for the last boat of the year, and after the 14th for the lights.

Every date on this page was read off the operator that sets it on . Operators revise their seasons, so check before you travel. Tell us if you find something out of date and we will fix it and say so.
