Standing 775 feet (236 metres) above the falls, Skylon Tower has been the defining landmark on the Canadian Niagara Falls skyline since it opened in 1965. The glass-enclosed exterior elevators, known as the "Yellow Bug" elevators for their distinctive appearance, rise along the outside of the tower shaft, giving riders panoramic views during the 52-second ascent. At the top, both an indoor observation deck and an outdoor open-air deck offer views that extend up to 80 kilometres on clear days: the Toronto skyline, Lake Ontario to the north, Lake Erie to the south, and the full sweep of the Niagara Peninsula.

Best Time to Visit - Golden Hour & Illumination
The single best time to visit Skylon Tower is 30–45 minutes before sunset. You arrive in golden-hour light, watch the sun set over Lake Erie, see the falls transition from daylight to the nightly LED illumination, and experience the fully lit falls from 775 feet above. This window, available every evening year-round, is universally cited as the highlight experience. Evening visits are busier; morning visits are quieter and offer the best clear-weather photography light on the falls themselves.
Outdoor Deck Weather & Conditions
- The outdoor deck is always 5–10°C (9–18°F) cooler than street level — bring a layer even in summer
- Wind can be significant on the outdoor deck — hats may blow off; long hair should be tied back for photography
- The outdoor deck occasionally closes in extreme wind conditions — the indoor deck remains open
- On cloudy or foggy days, low cloud can reduce visibility significantly — check forecasts before visiting
- Clear days with low humidity (typically October and early May) offer the greatest visibility for seeing Toronto
Photography Tips
The outdoor deck is the only option for photography without glass reflections. For the falls, position yourself at the southern rail. For the broadest panorama, walk the full circle of the outdoor deck, the 360° shift in perspective is remarkable. Morning light (before noon) illuminates the falls from the east for dramatic contrast photography. Evening light creates warm tones in the mist. Night photography of the illumination is spectacular, bring a tripod or use your phone's night mode.
Insider Tips
- The Yellow Bug elevator ascent is worth savouring — don't stare at your phone. Watch the falls come into view as you rise above the treeline.
- On the indoor deck, the interpretive maps are genuinely excellent for identifying the full geography — spend 5 minutes with them before going outside
- For the Revolving Dining Room, book the last seating time of the evening — you arrive in daylight and watch the illumination begin while dining
- Friday and Sunday evenings in June–September: position yourself on the outdoor deck at 10 PM for fireworks launched directly over Horseshoe Falls — the only place to see them from above
- In winter, the falls are partially frozen and the ice formations visible from this height are extraordinary — snow on the surrounding landscape adds to the drama
Acrophobia & Health Notes
The Yellow Bug exterior elevator is glass-enclosed and rises along the outside of the tower, the view downward is unobstructed. Guests with severe acrophobia or vertigo should be aware of this before boarding. The indoor observation deck and revolving restaurant are fully enclosed and do not have the same effect. No health restrictions otherwise, the experience involves no physical exertion and is fully accessible for all mobility levels.
Cancellation Policy
Our skip-the-line observation deck tickets come with free cancellation up to 24 hours before your visit, full refund, no questions asked. Skylon Tower is open year-round and virtually never closes. On the rare occasion the outdoor deck closes due to extreme wind, the indoor deck and all other facilities remain open. Revolving Dining Room reservations should be cancelled directly with the restaurant.
