Niagara Falls in December

December is the strong half of winter at Niagara and the reason is not the snow. The falls are floodlit from half past four, the festival runs every night, and from the 18th the fireworks go nightly. What you give up is the boats and about half the water.

The short answer

Yes, you can visit Niagara Falls in December, and the falls are lit from 4:30pm, the earliest of the year. Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station and Cave of the Winds all stay open. The Maid of the Mist does not sail, and both gorge walks are shut.

What makes December worth the trip rather than merely possible is the festival. It runs free every night, and from 18 December the fireworks go nightly instead of weekends only.

Key takeaways

  • The Winter Festival of Lights runs nightly from 5:00pm to midnight and is free to walk through. Fireworks are Fridays and Saturdays to 12 December, then nightly from the 18th to 2 January, which works out at 18 of December's 31 nights.
  • The falls are floodlit from 4:30pm all month, the earliest switch-on of the year, so an afternoon visit becomes an evening one at no extra cost.
  • Journey Behind the Falls, the Niagara Parks Power Station and the Butterfly Conservatory are all listed Year Round on their own pages. The White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aero Car are listed April to November and are shut.
  • Cave of the Winds is open on the American side at $14 adult and $10 youth, every day except Christmas Day, closing early on Christmas Eve.
  • The Maid of the Mist finished on 8 November and its own schedule says closed until 23 April. There is no American boat in December.
  • The Canadian boat is the one thing nobody can confirm. Niagara Parks lists it April to November; the tours that include it sell December dates. Ask before you plan a December boat trip.
  • The falls will not be frozen. The river has stopped once in recorded history, in 1848, and an ice boom has made that impossible since.

Eighteen of December's thirty one nights have fireworks over the falls. The festival is free to walk, the illumination starts at 4:30pm, and 21 of our 33 tours have a December date.

What December at Niagara actually is

Visiting Niagara Falls in December means accepting a trade that is more lopsided in your favour than the month's reputation suggests. You give up the boats and about half the guaranteed water. You get the one stretch of the year when the falls are floodlit before most people have finished work, a free festival running every night, and fireworks on more than half the nights in the month.

The number worth starting with is that last one. The Winter Festival of Lights puts fireworks over the falls on Fridays and Saturdays until 12 December, then every single night from the 18th to 2 January. Count them and December has 18 firework nights out of 31. No other month of the year has a nightly run at all.

The second number is 4:30pm. That is when Niagara Parks switches the illumination on through November and December, the earliest of the year, and it holds until 31 December before moving to 5:00pm in January. In practice it means a December afternoon turns into a December evening without anybody having to wait around for it, which is the opposite of how a short day usually works.

Eighteen of thirty one nights have fireworks. No other month of the year has a nightly run at all.

Can you visit Niagara Falls in December?

Yes, you can visit Niagara Falls in December, and the question is more reasonable than it sounds, because a lot of what Niagara sells does shut. The falls themselves never close. Both parks stay open, the viewing rails are free and walkable at any hour of any day, the illumination runs every night of the year, and the Canadian side adds eight weeks of festival lighting that costs nothing to walk through.

What closes is specific and worth knowing before you plan around it. The two gorge walks, the White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aero Car, are both listed April to November on their own pages and are finished for the year. The Maid of the Mist stopped on 8 November. Everything else on the list below is either open or, in one case, genuinely uncertain.

Is December a good time to see Niagara Falls?

Yes, on one condition. December is a good time to see Niagara Falls if you are coming for the evening, and a poor one if you are coming for the water.

The case for it is concrete. The rails that are three deep from June to September are walkable at any hour. Journey Behind the Falls, which in August means a timed ticket and a queue, is a walk-in. Cave of the Winds drops from $23 to $14. The festival is free and on every night, the fireworks are nightly for the last two weeks, and room rates across the city sit at their winter level right up until the Christmas week.

The case against is equally concrete. The 1950 treaty between Canada and the United States ends its tourist season on 31 October, so from 1 November the guaranteed minimum over the falls halves from 100,000 cubic feet per second in daylight to 50,000 around the clock. That is a floor rather than a measurement, and the operators are permitted to divert more. You are not seeing October's river. And there is no American boat at all.

Read from each operator on 4 November 2026. Niagara Parks no longer publishes the per-date hours feed this site used in October, so the Canadian rows are the seasonality label on each attraction's own page rather than a dated calendar.

Three things are worth pulling out of that table.

The Canadian side keeps more open than the American side, with one exception. Journey Behind the Falls runs 365 days a year and is the anchor of a December day rather than a consolation. The Power Station, its tunnel and the night show all run, and so does the Butterfly Conservatory, which is the one attraction on either side that actively benefits from the weather being bad. The exception is Cave of the Winds, which stays open on the American side all winter at a winter price.

Christmas closes things, and not all on the same day. Cave of the Winds shuts at 2:15pm on Christmas Eve, is closed all of Christmas Day, and reopens on Boxing Day. The festival runs straight through, including the holidays, on its own published hours.

Niagara Parks has stopped publishing the calendar this page needs. Through October it served a per-date hours feed, and that is where the specific December sailing dates on our winter page came from. The route returns 404 now. The seasonality labels on each attraction page are what is left, and they are coarser: a month range rather than a calendar.

Things to do in Niagara Falls in December

Things to do in Niagara Falls in December divide cleanly into the ones that are better in December than at any other time of year, and the ones that are simply still open.

Better in December. The Winter Festival of Lights is the whole argument for the month: illuminated displays through Queen Victoria Park and along the parkway, nightly from 5:00pm to midnight, free to walk, with fireworks on 18 of the month's nights. The Butterfly Conservatory is 2,000 free-flying butterflies in a heated glasshouse while it is below freezing outside, which lands differently in December than in July. And the illumination itself, lit at 4:30pm, gives you two hours of floodlit falls before most restaurants start serving dinner.

Still open, and quieter than you have ever seen it. Journey Behind the Falls puts you in tunnels cut through the bedrock behind the curtain, open every day of the year and with no queue worth the name. Cave of the Winds is the American equivalent and costs $14. The Niagara Parks Power Station runs its Currents sound and light show inside a 1905 generating hall, which is indoors, warm and genuinely good. The Skylon Tower deck is the warmest view of the falls there is.

What is not on the list. Both gorge walks, and the Maid of the Mist. Do not build a December day around any of them.

Niagara Falls weather in December

Niagara Falls weather in December hovers around freezing rather than sitting well below it. The average daily high is 2.7C (36.9F) and the average low is -3.8C (25.2F), so days are cold and nights are a little below. About 31.8cm of snow falls across roughly seven days of the month.

The number that decides your afternoon is none of those. It is the wind. The gorge funnels it, the rails above the falls are fully exposed, and the spray freezes onto everything it reaches, including you. A 2C afternoon at the railing is colder than a 2C afternoon anywhere else in the city. Waterproofs over layers, a hat and gloves are the difference between staying out for the illumination and going back to the hotel at 4:45.

Will Niagara Falls be frozen in December?

No, Niagara Falls will not be frozen in December, and it is worth being blunt about this because the photographs that circulate every winter are of ice built up around the falls rather than the falls stopped.

The river has halted once in recorded history, on 29 March 1848, when an ice jam upstream blocked it. In 1912 the American Falls froze completely while Horseshoe and Bridal Veil kept running. Since then an ice boom 2,700 metres long has been strung across the lake outlet each winter, which holds the pack back while letting the water through, so the 1848 version cannot happen again.

What December does give you is the beginning of the ice, rather than its best. The mist freezes onto the railings, the trees and the rocks around the basin, and it builds through the winter. If the frozen scenery is what you are coming for, February is the month for it, and the winter guide sets out why.

Is the Maid of the Mist open in December?

No. The Maid of the Mist is not open in December. Its own schedule page ends the 2026 season on Sunday 8 November and lists 1 January to 23 April as closed, which leaves no part of December in service. There is no partial run and no holiday special.

The Canadian boat is the harder question, and this page will not pretend to settle it. Two sources disagree.

Niagara Parks' own attraction page for Niagara City Cruises carries a seasonality label reading "Seasonal Apr - Nov", read on 4 November 2026. Against that, the two tours in our catalogue that include that boat publish 21 and 18 December departures respectively, and the booking endpoint prices them as available.

Until 31 October there was a third source that would have settled it: Niagara Parks served a per-date hours feed, and it listed the boat with open hours on specific December dates. That feed now returns 404 and the whole route has gone with it.

The likeliest reading is that the headline season really is April to November and a limited holiday programme runs outside it, which is how a coarse label and a handful of December sailings can both be true. But that is a reading rather than a fact, so if being on the water in December matters to you, ask the operator before you build a day around it. Everything else on this page is confirmed; this is the one thing that is not.

The bottom line

The bottom line on Niagara Falls in December is that the date inside the month matters more than the month, and the date that matters is the 18th.

Before it, the fireworks are Fridays and Saturdays only, which in December means the 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th. From the 18th to 2 January they are nightly, and that fortnight is the strongest two weeks of the Niagara winter: every attraction that is going to be open is open, the festival is at full stretch, and the only thing that has gone is the boats.

If your dates are yours to choose, take 18 to 23 December. You get the nightly fireworks, the festival, the 4:30pm illumination and Cave of the Winds at $14, and you are ahead of the Christmas week when the city fills up and rates climb. If they are fixed earlier, aim for a Friday or Saturday so the fireworks are not a coin toss. If they are fixed over Christmas itself, check what shuts on the 24th and 25th before you plan anything around it.

Book the date, not the month

The fireworks go nightly on the 18th, Cave of the Winds shuts early on the 24th and all day on the 25th, and the Canadian boat is the one thing nobody can confirm. Every card below carries its own live calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Niagara Falls in December?

Yes. You can visit Niagara Falls in December, and the falls themselves never close: both parks stay open, the illumination runs every night from 4:30pm, and the Winter Festival of Lights is on nightly. What closes is the boats and the two gorge walks, which are seasonal and finish in November.

Is December a good time to see Niagara Falls?

Yes, if the evening is what you came for. December is a good time to see Niagara Falls on that basis: It is the only month with a nightly fireworks run, the lights come on at 4:30pm, and prices are at their winter level. It is a poor choice if you wanted a boat, because the American one has finished for the year.

Is the Maid of the Mist open in December?

No. The Maid of the Mist is not open in December. Its own published schedule ends the 2026 season on 8 November and lists 1 January to 23 April as closed, so there is no American boat at Niagara at any point in December. The Canadian boat is a separate and less certain question.

Will Niagara Falls be frozen in December?

No. Niagara Falls will not be frozen in December. The river has stopped once in recorded history, when an ice jam blocked it on 29 March 1848, and an ice boom 2,700 metres long has been strung across the lake outlet every winter since to stop that happening again. Ice builds up around the falls; the water keeps moving.

What is open at Niagara Falls in December?

Open at Niagara Falls in December are Journey Behind the Falls, the Niagara Parks Power Station and the Butterfly Conservatory, all three listed Year Round, plus Cave of the Winds on the American side at $14 and the Winter Festival of Lights every night. The two gorge walks and the Maid of the Mist are shut.

How cold is Niagara Falls in December?

Niagara Falls in December averages a daily high of 2.7C (36.9F) and a low of -3.8C (25.2F), so it hovers around freezing rather than sitting well below it. About 31.8cm of snow falls across roughly seven days. The wind off the gorge is what decides how it feels.

Are there fireworks at Niagara Falls in December?

Yes. There are fireworks at Niagara Falls on 18 of December's 31 nights. They run Fridays and Saturdays until 12 December, which is the 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th, and then every night from 18 December to 2 January. No other month of the year has a nightly run.

Is Niagara Falls busy at Christmas?

No, not by the standards of the rest of the year. Niagara Falls is busier at Christmas than at any other point in winter, but still far below summer. The week between Christmas and New Year coincides with the nightly fireworks run, so the park fills in the evenings while the daytime attractions stay quiet.

About this article

Written by
The Visiting Niagara Falls editorial team. We are a booking marketplace for tours and tickets on both sides of the border. December is one of our quieter months, which is a reason to be straight about what it does and does not include.
How it was researched
The Maid of the Mist dates come from that operator's own schedule page. The Cave of the Winds hours and the $14 admission come from the Niagara Falls State Park site. The festival dates and the fireworks nights come from wfol.com, and the illumination times from Niagara Parks' own Falls Illumination page. The seasonality label on each Niagara Parks attraction comes from that attraction's own page.
The source that disappeared
Niagara Parks used to publish a per-date hours feed, and this site used it on 31 October to write out which December days the Canadian boat sails. That feed now returns 404 and the whole route is gone. The boat section below sets out what each remaining source says and does not resolve it, because resolving it would mean guessing.
On the weather figures
The normals are for Niagara Falls, Ontario, as published on Wikipedia: temperature from the 1991 to 2020 period and precipitation and snow from Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals. They are averages across thirty years, not a forecast.
On the water
The 1950 treaty sets a minimum flow, not the flow. What actually goes over the falls on a December day depends on how much the power stations are diverting, and neither country publishes that hour by hour. The honest statement is that the guaranteed floor halved on 1 November.
What we left out
Hotel rates, because we do not sell rooms and had no source to read them off. And any claim that the falls freeze, because they do not.
